After feeling the sun’s warmth,
I woke the next morning to the chill
Of howling winds and cloudy skies.
The first day of spring had passed
I was sure it would never return.
Such began the year that
Winter lasted forever.
The hours and days flew by,
Underneath a cloudy sky.
My fingers, my nose, and bone marrow,
Were penetrated by the incessant beating
Of winter upon the world.
I never stopped shivering the year that
Winter lasted forever.
Every person's face was grim;
Their lips were frozen in time.
Who could think to smile
At this bitter luck of ours?
The calendar declared it was spring,
But the elements battled that demand,
The dreadful year when
Winter lasted forever.
It was during this unfavorable time,
That a miracle began to emerge
For tears froze and heartaches became numb
And none of us succumbed to loneliness.
Instead, we drew closer
The year that,
Winter lasted forever.
For warmth, we cuddled and embraced
Even strangers passing our way.
No one was left out in the cold
For we all felt the bitter sting
Of winter upon our brow
And moved to offer every means
Of comfort to others, during the year,
Winter lasted forever
While exterior shadows converged frightfully,
We hid together from the claws of winter.
We whispered to one another in order,
That we might create more heat.
It was a sea of humanity shutting the door,
On the icy mask of the world and melting
Into an interior warmth. To defy the
Winter that lasted forever.
Gradually, the sun won nature’s battle
And took its place in the atmosphere.
With waves of heat, it swept away
The monstrous drifts that remained.
Strangers crept out of every house
And blinked in surprise.
You see, during the endless storms,
All had forgotten that
Winter almost lasted forever.
I stood on my porch the next day,
Watching the world
Revert to its natural course.
The frozen hearts and hermits fell back into place.
The world melted and, at the same time,
I mused at how awful it was that
Winter had not lasted forever.
For now, what cause had we,
To shelter fellow strangers?
Who would care for the homeless?
Who would whisper to orphans
On warm spring nights?
Must we only help them if,
Winter lasted forever?
Then, my tears that
once had no cause to fall,
Coursed down my cheek.
In distress, I uttered a desperate prayer,
For nature to reverse itself.
It was not to be so, but in that prayer
remained my last remnant of when
Winter lasted forever.
